How it works

1. Initial Consult

Book a 50 minute telehealth session with a psychologist who offers ADHD assessments. Talk through your situation and find out whether a full assessment is the right next step for you.

2. ADHD Assessment

If your psychologist recommends it, complete a full ADHD assessment over two follow-up sessions: an 80 minute clinical assessment and a 50 minute feedback session.

3. Report

Your psychologist provides a formal ADHD diagnosis and writes your diagnostic report. It's yours to keep and share.

4. Management

Your psychologist goes through your report with you and talks through your management options. Psychologists can't prescribe medication, but they can refer you to your GP or a psychiatrist to discuss it.

A note on medication

Psychologists in Australia aren't able to prescribe medication, so medication isn't part of this service. If you'd like to discuss medication as part of your treatment, your psychologist can refer you to your GP or a psychiatrist, and your report goes with you.

Will I get an official ADHD diagnosis?

If you meet the criteria for ADHD, yes. Your assessment is done by an AHPRA registered psychologist using a structured diagnostic interview, and your written report is a formal diagnostic report you can share with your GP, a psychiatrist or your workplace.

No assessment can promise a particular result. Your psychologist assesses your clinical presentation and only makes a diagnosis where it's appropriate. If you don't meet the criteria, your report explains why and what might be going on instead.

What happens in the initial consult?

It's a normal 50 minute telehealth session. You talk through what's been going on and what you're hoping to get from an assessment. Your psychologist will tell you honestly whether an assessment makes sense for you.

If it does, they set up the assessment and you pay for it from your Talked account. If it doesn't, you've had a useful session and you're not committed to anything else.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book your initial consult straight away. If you want to claim a Medicare rebate on that session, you'll need a mental health treatment plan from your GP first. The assessment itself doesn't need a referral.

Can I use my Mental Health Treatment Plan?

For your initial consult, yes, if you have a mental health treatment plan and referral from your GP. Diagnostic assessments aren't covered by Medicare, so there's no rebate on the ADHD assessment itself. That's why it's priced as one package with everything included.

If you continue with therapy afterwards, the usual Medicare rules apply to those sessions.

Can I get medication?

Not through Talked. Psychologists in Australia aren't able to prescribe medication. If your assessment supports an ADHD diagnosis and medication might help, your psychologist can write a referral letter for your GP or a psychiatrist, and your report goes with it.

How long does it take?

Three sessions in all: a 50 minute initial consult, an 80 minute assessment session, and a 50 minute feedback session. Most people finish within two to four weeks, depending on your psychologist's availability and how quickly you complete any questionnaires they send you.

What if I don't have ADHD?

Then that's what your report will say, along with what your psychologist thinks is going on and what they'd recommend next. A clear answer either way is the point. The fee covers the assessment, not a particular outcome.

Who does the assessment?

An AHPRA registered psychologist on Talked who has chosen to offer ADHD assessments. The same psychologist sees you for your initial consult, your assessment session and your feedback session, so you never have to start over with someone new.

What is in the report?

A summary of your history and the questionnaires you completed, what came out of the assessment session, whether you meet the criteria for ADHD, and your psychologist's recommendations. Your psychologist goes through it with you in your feedback session and sends you a copy, and it's yours to share with your GP, a psychiatrist or anyone else you choose.
