Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers, so you can decide with a clear head.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Usually much sooner than you'd expect. Every psychologist's calendar is live on their profile, so you can see exactly when they're free and book it on the spot. There's no waiting list and no phone tag.

If you need to be seen quickly, sort the search by next available and see sessions available within just 12 hours.

Is online as good as sitting in a room together?

Yes, research shows that telehealth therapy is just as effective as in-person. It's the same psychologist, the same training and the same approaches. What changes is where you sit. Some people find it easier to open up from their own couch than in an unfamiliar office, and you're far less likely to skip a session when it doesn't involve traffic and parking.

Is online counselling the same as online psychology?

In everyday use, yes. People say therapy, counselling and psychology to mean the same thing: talking through what's going on with a qualified professional, in this case by video, phone or chat from wherever you are. If you searched for online counselling and landed here, you're in the right place.

The one difference worth knowing is who you see. A psychologist is registered with AHPRA and their sessions can attract Medicare rebates. A counsellor is registered with the ACA or PACFA and charges a lower fee. Both offer the same kind of session, and the section above on who to see will help you choose.

What if we don't click?

You can switch at anytime. Feeling comfortable with your psychologist is the single biggest factor in whether therapy works. You can book with someone else at any time, and your previous therapist wont be notified of the change.

Many psychologists offer a free 15 minute video consult before you commit to a full session, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of choosing.

Who am I actually talking to?

A psychologist registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), which sets the standards every psychologist in Australia has to meet. All psychologists go through a vetting and interview process, where we check registration, qualifications and experience.
