What we can help with

What therapy can help teenagers with

Whatever you're dealing with, talking it through with someone who works with people your age can make a real difference. Here are some of the things teenagers come to us for.

Feeling flat or shut off

Spending more time in your room and not really wanting to talk to anyone. A therapist gives you somewhere to say the things you can't say at home yet.

School is getting hard

Grades slipping, dreading Monday, or not wanting to go at all. There's usually something underneath it, and it can be worked on.

Worry that won't switch off

Panic before exams, overthinking everything, a stomach that's always in knots. Anxiety is the most common reason teenagers see us, and it gets better.

Big moods, big reactions

Going from fine to furious or in tears, and not always knowing why. A therapist helps you understand what is going on and gives you ways to ride it out.

Friends, bullying and phones

Friendship fallouts, being left out, or a group chat that never stops. It hurts more than people think, and talking it through helps.

Sleep or eating has changed

Up all night, skipping meals, or the opposite. Often a sign that something else is going on, and worth talking about early.

Self esteem and confidence

Being harsh on yourself, comparing yourself to everyone, or feeling like you're not good enough. Therapy helps you see yourself more fairly and build confidence that lasts.

Big changes at home

Parents separating, moving house, a new school, or losing someone. A therapist gives you a steady place to make sense of it while everything else shifts.

Stress and pressure

Exams, expectations, sport, and a schedule that never lets up. You'll learn ways to manage the load so it stops feeling like too much.

How it works

Your sessions, your own space

Getting started takes a few minutes. From there, the sessions are yours.

  1. First

    Create your account

Sign up, choose the teenager session type, and pick a therapist and a time that suits you. A parent or carer can set it up for you if you would rather.

  2. Next

    Fill in a short intake

A few questions about what's been going on and what you'd like help with, so your therapist knows where to start. There are no wrong answers. If you're under 16, this is where a parent or carer confirms their consent before your first session.

  3. Then

    Join from wherever you are

Phone, tablet or laptop, from your room or anywhere private. Fifty minute sessions, by video, phone or text chat, with the same therapist each time.

The right fit

A therapist who gets teenagers

Working with teenagers is not the same as working with adults, and the therapists you'll see here have chosen to do it. Every one is qualified, registered, and has been vetted and interviewed before joining Talked.

The thing that matters most is whether you like the person. So have a look. Every profile has a short video of the therapist talking, so you can find someone who sounds like they'd get it, and many offer a free 15 minute video consult before the first session, so you can meet them with nothing riding on it.

For parents and carers

Are you a parent? Here's what you need to know.

Your teenager might have found this page, or you might have. Either way, here is what you need to know to get them started. Nobody is going to make them talk about anything, and nobody is going to lecture them. It is fifty minutes with someone whose whole job is to be on their side.

  • Your teenager can create their own account and book, or you can set it up for them. If they're under 16, you'll need to give your consent before their first session.
  • Sessions are confidential, unless there is ever a safety concern. You may also be required to join session, and will be guided by your psychologist.
  • Sessions are 50 minutes by video, phone or text chat, and your teenager chooses the format when the session is booked.
  • Not sure they will go? Let them browse the profiles, book a free 15 minute consult, and agree to try one session before deciding anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers, so you can decide with a clear head.

Do I see the therapist on my own?

Yes. If you're 16 or over, the sessions are just you and your therapist. If you're under 16, a parent or carer needs to give their consent before you start, and your therapist may ask them to join your first session, depending on what they think will help. After that, the sessions are yours.

Can I book it myself?

Yes. You can create your own account, choose the teenager session type, pick your therapist and book a time. If you're 16 or over, that's all there is to it. If you're under 16, a parent or carer needs to give their consent before your first session, which is a quick step in the intake form. A parent can also set it all up for you if you'd rather.

Will my parents be told what I talk about?

No. What you say stays between you and your therapist, the same as it does for adult clients. The only exception is if your therapist is worried about your safety or someone else's, and they'll explain that to you in the first session so there are no surprises.

Can we use Medicare?

Yes. With a mental health treatment plan and referral from a GP, Medicare rebates apply to sessions with a psychologist or clinical psychologist, and we lodge each claim. If you don't have a plan yet, you can book a bulk billed online GP appointment through Talked and sort it from home.

Can I message instead of video?

Yes. Sessions can be video, phone or text chat, and you choose when the session is booked. Plenty of people start with chat or camera off and move to video once they're comfortable.

How much does it cost?

Session fees depend on whether you see a psychologist, clinical psychologist or counsellor, and the current fees are on our pricing page. Medicare rebates apply to psychologist sessions with a treatment plan, and private health extras may cover part of the cost.
