Medicare psychology rebates for 2025

In a Nutshell

  • Medicare recently announced a rebate increase, effective on 1st July 2025.

  • This means that eligible individuals with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan can claim a rebate of $145.25 for a session with a clinical psychologist, $98.97 for a general psychologist, or $87.24 for a social worker.

Looking after your mental health is one of the most important things you can do. Thankfully, Australia’s Medicare system continues to make professional mental health support more accessible.

Can I really use Medicare for mental health support?

Absolutely. Thanks to Australia’s Better Access initiative, many people can access mental health support through Medicare.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with your mental health, or simply want someone to talk to, Medicare can help by covering part of the cost of seeing a qualified professional.

Check out our Medicare page for more details.

What is the Medicare rebate for psychology sessions in 2025?

As of 1 July 2025, eligible individuals with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) can claim a rebate of $145.25 for a 50-minute session with a clinical psychologist, $98.97 for a general psychologist, or $87.24 for an accredited social worker.

How can I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan online?

Book an online appointment with your doctor or Talked’s GP partner. When you book, do tell them that you hope to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and access psychology rebates through Medicare. This detail will help your GP prepare and set enough time for your appointment.

Read our guide on how to get an MHTP for more details.

What about out-of-pocket costs?

You will need to pay for your psychology session before claiming a Medicare rebate. On Talked, you will be charged the full session fee 48 hours before your appointment, but Talked will also process the rebate for you after your session. Medicare will then deposit your rebate straight into your bank account.

The difference between the full fee and Medicare rebate is typically called the gap fee or your total out-of-pocket cost. Here’s an example to illustrate potential gap fees:
