Mental health support is more accessible than ever, especially if you're covered by a private health fund like Mildura Health Fund.
If you're a member wondering how to claim psychology or counselling sessions, this guide breaks down what you need to know about your cover, what’s included, and how to get the most out of your benefits.
Can you claim the same session through both Mildura and Medicare?

If your Mildura Extras include mental health benefits, then yes, both online and in-person psychology are covered.
Mental health support is typically included in the “Mid” and “Five Star” levels, while the “Base” Extras policy may not provide benefits for these services. To find out what you're eligible for, you can log in to Mildura’s member portal and review your cover.

Keep in mind that Mildura Health Fund also requires a short waiting period (usually 2 months) before you can claim mental health services on a new or upgraded policy.
Under a qualifying Extras cover, Mildura Health Fund covers mental health services from an accredited psychologist, counsellor, or mental health social worker.
The specific amount you can claim per session and the total annual benefit limit depend on your Extras. Below is an overview, but be sure to double-check your policy website for accurate information.
Mildura Extras | Session with a psychologist | Session with a counsellor | Session with a mental health social worker | Shared calendar limit for all mental health services |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Note that not all mental health providers can deliver Mildura-eligible sessions. To avoid any hassle, it’s best to visit a clinic or an online platform like Talked where you can find Mildura-recognised therapists in an instant.
The claiming process is simple and straightforward. If your appointment is in-person and your therapist uses HICAPS, you can simply swipe your card to claim on the spot.
Otherwise, you can manually file your claim through online and in-person methods or via post.
Take a photo of your session invoice or receipt, then submit it via Mildura’s app.
If your session was through Talked, this becomes even simpler. Talked will provide you with an invoice immediately after your session, containing all the necessary details that Mildura requires. Once you have your invoice, simply follow the submission instructions on the app.

Email your invoice to mhf@mildurahealthfund.com.au, or send it via post. You can also visit any Mildura branch and show them your invoice.
It’s best to lodge your claim immediately after your treatment. You’ll also receive your rebate faster if you do this.
No, private health insurers and Medicare cannot both pay benefits for the same session. However, you can use them at different times to manage the cost of therapy throughout the year.
Here’s how it typically works:
Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year through the Better Access program, with a GP referral and mental health care plan.
Mildura Health Fund can cover sessions that fall outside this program, or where you choose not to go through Medicare.
This gives you more flexibility in how you structure your support. You might start the year using Medicare and switch to your Extras cover once your 10 sessions are up, or vice versa.

Mildura Health Fund doesn’t restrict you to a specific network of providers, but your therapist must meet their eligibility requirements. These include:
Being a registered psychologist (with AHPRA)
Being an accredited counsellor with relevant qualifications
Being a mental health social worker with appropriate credentials
You can ask your therapist in advance if they meet Mildura’s claiming criteria. If you're not sure where to start, Talked makes it easy. All therapists on the platform are pre-screened, and invoices include the information needed for claiming with private health insurers like Mildura.

Mildura Health Fund offers valuable support for mental health through its Extras policies. Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, grief, or simply want to improve your wellbeing, access to therapy is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
If you're not sure what your current policy includes, take a moment to check your benefit schedule or contact the fund directly. And when you're ready to speak with someone, Talked is here to help you find the right therapist.
