UniHealth provides health cover designed specifically for people working in the tertiary education sector. Depending on your Extras cover, you can access different services to support your overall health, including dental, optical, chiro, remedial massage, and psychology services.
If you're planning to start mental health therapy and want to know whether you can claim psychology with UniHealth, this guide explains how UniHealth psychology rebates work, how to check your cover, and how to claim sessions with a Talked psychologist.
Yes. UniHealth Extras generally treats online psychology the same way it treats in-person psychology sessions. If psychology appears in your Extras cover, your telehealth appointment with a psychologist should also be eligible.
Many UniHealth members prefer online therapy because it’s more flexible and easier to fit around work and family commitments. Platforms like Talked make this online therapy even easier and more secure, with appointments usually available within 24 hours.
Note that different Extras covers have different benefits and yearly limits. Before trying to access services, it’s best to log in on your UniHealth account and verify your coverage or review UniHealth’s list of Extras per tier through their website:

Depending on your Extras cover, UniHealth may provide rebates for an initial consultation as well as subsequent therapy sessions with a recognised provider. This usually means:
The practitioner is AHPRA-registered
The service aligns with UniHealth’s recognised psychology item types
Your invoice includes all required claim information
Sessions with counsellors or other non-registered therapists are typically not eligible for UniHealth Extras rebates.
Thankfully, every psychologist on Talked is AHPRA-registered, so members can confidently book knowing their therapist meets standard private-health requirements.

All of UniHealth’s Extras policies include psychology, but specific benefits and yearly limits vary and may slightly change every year. It’s always best to check your policy every now and then for the most accurate information.
Basic Extras provides a $45 rebate for each psychology consultation, but the annual limit of $500 per person (and $1,000 per family) is shared with other services such as physiotherapy and dietetics.
Mid Extras provides rebates of $100 for a psychology assessment, $72 for an initial consultation, and $72 for every subsequent consultation. The yearly limit of $350 per person, which includes a $118 limit for digital mental health support with THIS WAY UP.
Top Extras provides rebates of $100 for a psychology assessment, $100 for an initial consultation, and $72 for every subsequent consultation. The yearly limit of $600 per person, including a $118 limit for digital mental health support with THIS WAY UP.
Note that UniHealth also applies waiting periods to some Extras benefits, including psychology. If you’ve recently joined the fund or upgraded your cover, double-check whether your waiting period has passed.
Booking through Talked is straightforward. You pay for your psychology session 48 hours before your appointment, join the session at the set schedule, then claim your rebate through UniHealth using the invoice provided.
Your Talked invoice will include details that match what UniHealth typically requires for Extras claims:
Your name
Your psychologist’s name and AHPRA provider number
The date and type of service
The fee charged
You can lodge your claim in three ways:
Upload a photo or PDF of your invoice and submit your claim via the UniHealth app.

Log in to your UniHealth account, select “Make a claim,” and upload your invoice.
If you prefer a manual option, you can send a completed claim form with your invoice via
email: submitclaim@unihealthinsurance.com.au
post: UniHealth GPO Box 9812, Sydney NSW 2001
in person: at the Surry Hills or Parramatta Member Care Centre
If you see a psychologist in person, they may have HICAPS available, allowing you to swipe your UniHealth card and only pay the gap fee straightaway.
UniHealth allows you to lodge a claim within 2 years after receiving an eligible service. However, it’s best to submit your claim soon after your psychology session so it’s processed within the correct benefit year and you receive your rebate sooner.
No, you cannot claim the same psychology appointment from both Medicare and UniHealth. But you do have the option to:
Use Medicare rebates first through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), then
Switch to private health Extras benefits once your Medicare-subsidised sessions are used
Talked can connect you with a GP if you need support accessing an MHTP.
Members can use UniHealth’s “Find a specialist” tool to search for psychologists.
Alternatively, you can use Talked to browse therapist profiles, book 15-minute intro sessions for free, and secure therapy appointments with a therapist you like.

UniHealth Extras can make psychological support more affordable, and Talked makes the claiming process effortless. After your session, your invoice is ready to download and lodge through the UniHealth app or member portal.
If you're ready to get started, explore Talked’s network of psychologists and book a session at a time that works for you.

Not with UniHealth? Don't worry, we have your back. Talked also lets eligible users claim mental health rebate from Bupa, ahm, Medibank, Police Health, CUA Health, Doctors Health, nib, HBF, HCF, CBHS Health, Australian Unity, GMHBA, Westfund, Peoplecare, GU Health, Teachers Health, Nurses & Midwives Health, and many more private health insurers.
