Medibank does help you claim mental health services. If you're seeking counselling or any type of mental health service please read this article to make sure that you maximise your benefits.
If you want to claim your mental health benefits from Medibank health insurance or have asked yourself "how do I claim mental health services from Medibank", we are here to help.
There are many types of mental health professionals that can support you in your mental health journey. From psychologists, counsellors, and social workers to psychotherapists, these mental health professionals are all trained to deal with your mental health issues. If you are unsure what the difference is between all these types of therapists, check out our blog post explaining the distinctions.
When deciding on which therapist to see you must ensure they are a Medibank recognised therapist - we've made it easy for you to see all the Medibank therapists who are available right now.
In order for Medibank to cover the cost (or part of the cost) of your therapy session, the therapist must meet their criteria and be approved by Medibank. Medibank makes it clear that Medibank Extras covers mental health services but can only be used for consultations with a psychologist or Medibank recognised counsellor.
If you book a therapist who is not approved by Medibank you cannot expect to claim the cost back, even if you are covered for the service.
We have made it easy for you to see an approved Medibank counsellor or therapist. If you book with one of these therapists you will be able to claim the cost back.
In addition to choosing an approved therapist, you must also check that your Medibank Extras cover includes mental health services. Medibank normally pays towards the cost of psychology, counselling and digital mental health under the mental health category on most extras and packaged covers, but it's always good to check. Use the link below to log in to your Medibank account and check.
When using Talked to see your Medibank approved therapist, you will be required to pay for it upfront. After your session, you'll be provided with an invoice which you can then use to submit a claim to Medibank.
If you book a therapist through the Talked platform then you'll simply be able to log in to your account and download the invoice. The Talked platform automatically populates with the exact information Medibank requires to submit a claim, including the therapist's provider number.
Once you have your invoice you can follow these simple steps to submit a claim:
Log in to your Medibank login
Select "make a claim" from the menu options
Upload the invoice
Medibank has no waiting periods for psychology and counselling mental health support.
Sure does! Online therapy is providing a lot of help and support for people who may not have had access to such services, so Medibank recognises this and provides cover for it.
It is important to check what mental health services are covered under your extras. You can check this in your Medibank account.
You can not claim the full cost back on both Medicare and Medibank. If you see a psychologist you must decide whether you claim the cost mainly through Medicare or your Medibank policy, but not both.
If you are eligible for Medicare, your psychologist may still charge a gap fee. Medibank may help pay this gap depending on the level of cover you have.
If you wish to use the Medicare rebate to see a psychologist, you must talk with your GP and get a referral. The process can be a bit confusing, but we've made it simple with our guide to booking your first Medicare appointment.
We've made it super easy for you to find and connect with a Medibank approved therapist online. You can browse our list of Medibank approved therapists, book a session and connect with them via our secure video service.
After your appointment, we will provide you with an invoice containing all the information you need to claim mental health benefits from Medibank.
