As a private health insurer providing cover for many Australians through employer and organisational plans, GU Health supports access to a range of health and wellbeing services, including those related to mental health.
If you are planning to start therapy with a psychologist and you are covered by GU Health, some of the cost of your sessions may be claimable through your extras (general treatment) cover. This guide explains what you need to know about claiming psychology services with GU Health, including how to check your cover and how to submit a claim through Talked.
GU Health provides extras (general treatment) cover under many of its plans, which may include psychology services. This can apply to both face-to-face and telehealth (online) psychology sessions, depending on the specific inclusions in your policy.
Because GU Health plans differ based on your employer’s selected level of cover, it’s important to check whether psychology is included in your extras benefits before booking.
You can confirm this by logging into your GU Health member account or reviewing your benefits schedule.

To be eligible to claim a psychology session through GU Health, the psychologist must meet GU Health’s provider requirements, including being appropriately registered and recognised (for example, AHPRA-registered). You cannot claim a rebate for sessions with any therapist if your therapist does not meet GU Health’s criteria or if psychology is not included in your extras cover.
For example, some GU Health plans may cover sessions with psychologists but not sessions with counsellors or unregistered practitioners.
Booking with a registered psychologist via Talked makes it easy to access care that is aligned with standard private health fund requirements. However, you should still confirm with GU Health that psychology is included under your individual extras policy.
Unlike retail health funds, GU Health policies can be customised for specific employers or organisations. This means psychology rebates may be included in some GU Health plans but not in others.

Only policies that explicitly list psychology or a related mental-health service type will be eligible for rebates.
The amount you can receive back for psychology services with GU Health depends on the specific details of your extras policy, including:
Waiting periods - Most extras policies include a waiting period, meaning you must hold your cover for a minimum period before you are eligible to claim. If you recently joined or upgraded your cover, this may still apply.
Annual limits - Your policy will also include an annual limit for psychology or allied health services. This may include both an individual limit and a family limit.
Consult type - Some policies may reimburse different benefit amounts for an initial consultation versus subsequent visits.

When you book a psychology session with a Talked psychologist, you will pay for the appointment upfront.
After your session, there are several ways that you can make your GU Health psychology claim after speaking with a Talked psychologist.
1. Use the GU Health mobile app
If you book a psychology session, you can claim by taking a photo or screenshot of the receipt or invoice. To be eligible to claim a GU Health session, you must make sure it contains the following details:
Patient’s name
Provider’s name and number
Date of service
Service provided
Amount paid
Once your receipt includes all the necessary details, you can submit your claim through the GU Health mobile app. Just open the app, snap a photo of your receipt, attach any supporting documents, and hit Submit.
For sessions booked via the Talked platform, simply log in to your account to download the invoice. This invoice is pre-populated with all the information GU Health requires to process your claim, including your therapist’s provider number.

2. Claim through Online Member Services
Once you have your invoice, you can log in to your Online Member Services and hit the "Submit claim" button. You can upload up to four photos or PDFs of your receipts.
If you’re seeing a psychologist in person rather than through Talked, you may be able to swipe your membership card directly at the psychologist’s HICAPS terminal. In this case, you’ll only need to pay the gap, the difference between the psychologist’s fee and the amount covered by GU Health coverage.

Most private health insurers allow members to submit claims after services have been provided, often within a period of up to two years. However, to ensure your claim is processed smoothly and to avoid any issues with annual limits resetting, it is best to submit your claim as soon as possible after your appointment.
If you’re unsure of the timeframe for your specific GU Health policy, check your membership information or contact their customer support team.
In most cases, you cannot claim the same session through both GU Health and Medicare. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, you may be eligible to claim psychology sessions through Medicare. Once those Medicare-funded sessions have been used, you may then be able to claim through your private health insurance if your GU Health plan allows this.
