As an Australian, member-focused private health insurer, Teachers Health is committed to supporting the overall health and wellbeing of its members, including access to mental health care.
If you are planning to begin therapy with a psychologist and you’re covered by Teachers Health, part of the cost of your sessions may be claimable through your extras cover. This guide helps you understand whether your Teachers Health policy includes psychology, how to check your eligibility, and how to claim your rebate through Talked.
How do I use Teachers Health extras to claim the cost back of psychology?
Can I claim a psychologist fee on Teachers Health and Medicare?
Teachers Health provides benefits for psychology services for eligible members. This can include both in-person and online psychology sessions, giving members greater flexibility in how they access support.
Before booking your appointment, it’s important to check that psychology services are included under your extras cover. You can do this by logging in to your Teachers Health member account or reviewing your policy’s included services.

To be eligible for a rebate on your psychology sessions, the psychologist you see must meet Teachers Health’s provider requirements, including being AHPRA-registered. Sessions with counsellors or non-registered therapists are generally not claimable. However, Teachers Health is one of the few insurers that allow its members to claim sessions with counsellors registered with Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA); or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and and are registered with the Australian Regional Health Group (ARHG).
If you are unsure what the difference is between all these types of therapists, then check out our blog post explaining the distinctions.
You cannot claim a rebate simply because you are seeing any therapist; the provider must be appropriately registered and meet Teachers Health criteria.
To make this easy, Talked connects you with AHPRA-registered psychologists who meet private health fund requirements. When you book through Talked, you can be confident that your session meets professional standards for claiming under an eligible extras policy.
In addition to choosing a suitable provider, you will also need to make sure your Teachers Health extras policy includes psychology services, as not all extras policies include this benefit. Use the link below to log in to your Teachers Health account and verify whether your extras cover includes mental health services.
Check my Teachers Health cover
If you are unsure whether your current Teachers Health policy covers psychology, it’s a good idea to check your extras inclusions list or contact Teachers Health directly.
Only specific extras policies include rebates for psychological services, and inclusions may differ between levels of cover. The current extras packages that are available to claim psychology benefits are:
Basic Extras
Mid Extras
Top Extras
When seeking Teachers Health extras cover for psychology rebates, it's crucial to verify that the policy details include "Psychology." If you have a policy that supports Teachers Health psychology rebates, understanding the amount covered under the annual limit is just as important.
The amount you can receive back from Teachers Health depends on the details of your individual extras policy. We highly recommend that you review the full disclosure PDF of your cover to understand how your policy works by logging into your Teachers Health.
When reviewing your cover, look for the following key terms:
Waiting Period – Extras policies usually include a waiting period before benefits can be claimed. This means you may need to hold your policy for a certain amount of time before claiming on psychology services. Currently, Teachers Health enforces a two-month waiting period before members can claim psychology rebates. If you're thinking of joining Teachers Health, be aware that they have offered promotions in the past that waive this waiting period.
Limit Per Person – The Limit Per Person represents the maximum amount that is claimable by a person under their extras policy under either a calendar year or financial year.
Limit Per Family – The Limit Per Family represents the maximum amount that is claimable by a family under a policy.
The table below sets out in detail, as of the time of this guide, the amount that Teachers Health covers under their current extras policies.
Extras Cover | Pyschology | Counselling | THIS WAY UP | Limit per Person | Limit per Family |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Basic Extras | $45 per session | $30 per session | $45 | $500 | $1,000 |
Mid Extras | $72 (individual) $20 (group) | $50 (initial session) $45 (subsequent session) | $45 | $350 | - |
Top Extras | $100 (initial session) $72 (subsequent session) $20 (group) | $50 (initial session) $45 (subsequent session) | $59 | $600 | - |
When booking your Teachers Health psychology session through Talked, payment will be required upfront. Once your session is complete, we’ll issue you an invoice that you can use to claim your rebate directly from Teachers Health.
If you’d like to access your invoice via Talked, simply log in to your account and download it. The invoice will be automatically populated with all the details Teachers Health needs to process your claim without delay. There are 4 ways that you can make your Teachers Health psychology claim after speaking with a Talked psychologist.
1. Use the Teachers Health mobile app
If you book a psychology session, you can claim by taking a photo or screenshot of the receipt or invoice. To be eligible to claim a Teachers Health session, you must make sure it contains the following details:
Patient’s name
Provider’s name and number
Date of service
Service provided
Amount paid
Once you have your receipt with all the required details, you can lodge your claim using the Teachers Health mobile app. Simply open the app, take a photo of your receipt, attach any supporting documents, and tap submit.
If your session is booked through the Talked platform, you can easily log in to your account and download the invoice. This invoice is automatically filled with all the information Teachers Health needs to process your claim, including your therapist’s provider number.

2. Claim through Online Member Services
Once you have your invoice you can log in your Online Member Services and hit the "Submit claim" button. You can upload up to four photos or PDFs of your receipts.
3. Email
Emailing your completed claim form to Teachers Health with your receipts at submitclaim@teachershealth.com.au is a form of lodgement that Teachers Health accepts.
4. Post
If you would prefer to post your claim, Teachers Health allows you to send your claim to them along with a claim form by post. You must ensure that it is addressed to Teachers Health, GPO Box 9812, Sydney NSW 2001.
We also would like to note that if you are not seeing a psychologist through Talked and you're visiting your psychologist in person, you may be able to swipe your membership card at the psychologist's HICAPS machine. There's no need to pay the full amount, only the difference between the psychologist fee and the Teachers Health coverage.

Teachers Health does not publicly specify a submission deadline. Claims can be submitted at your convenience after the session (typical of many funds). However, as general best practice: claims should be submited promptly to ensure benefit availability and avoid complications (e.g., before annual limits reset).
If in doubt, log in to your Online Member Services or app and check your “Benefit Usage.”
Like Teachers Health, Medicare allows people claiming the Medicare rebate to submit their claims within two years of the session. However unlike Teachers Health, at Talked we are able to submit and process Medicare rebates on your behalf. Learn more on our Medicare page.
Unfortunately, Teachers Health does not allow psychology sessions to be claimed through Medicare and Teachers Health at the same time. If you are using the Medicare rebate for your sessions, you’ll need to wait until you’ve used all of your yearly Medicare‑covered sessions before submitting a claim with Teachers Health.
To check whether you’re eligible for a Medicare rebate, it’s best to speak with your GP. The process can feel a little complex, so we’ve created an article on Medicare to help guide you. Please keep in mind that even when claiming through Medicare, there may still be a gap fee depending on your psychologist’s charges.
If you’d like to claim via Medicare, you can also book an appointment with Talked's bulk billed GP to obtain your Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
Teachers Health provides a “Find Extras Providers” search tool — you can search by service type (e.g., psychology, counselling) and location, or name, to find a provider recognised by Teachers Health.
Alternatively, if you book via a platform like Talked and the psychologist is AHPRA-registered and recognised by Teachers Health, the treatment should be eligible for a rebate under your Extras policy. Find a Teachers Health psychologist on Talked today
Teachers Health offers valuable support for mental health through their Extras cover. Combined with Talked’s secure telehealth platform and streamlined invoicing, claiming your psychology rebate from a Teachers Health approved therapist becomes more straightforward.
