Frank Health Insurance does things a little differently. As a not-for-profit fund backed by GMHBA, Frank reinvests its profits into improving benefits and services for members, rather than paying shareholders.
It’s built around simplicity and transparency, with straightforward cover options, a digital membership card for easy claiming, and a locally based customer support team ready to help when you need it.
Beyond the practical perks, Frank is also committed to supporting members’ overall wellbeing, including their mental health. With selected Extras cover including benefits for psychology and counselling, members can access professional support while reducing out-of-pocket costs.
If you’re with Frank Health Insurance and you’re considering therapy, here’s what you need to know about accessing mental health services and claiming your benefits with ease.
Which Frank Health Extras policies include mental health treatment?
How to claim psychology sessions with Frank Health Insurance?
Can you claim the same session through both Frank Health and Medicare?
Yes, Frank Health Insurance can cover online psychology sessions, provided your Extras policy includes psychology or counselling benefits.
Telehealth has become a standard way to access mental health care across Australia, and Frank supports this shift. Whether your session is delivered via video or in person, the same general rules apply:
Your Extras cover must include psychology or counselling
Your provider must meet eligibility requirements
The service must fall within Frank’s approved benefits categories
This flexibility is especially helpful if you prefer accessing care from home or live in an area with limited in-person services.

Frank includes mental health services under its Classic and Max Extras. Lite Extras does not include psychology benefits.
Classic Extras covers $300 for psychology services per person and per calendar year. This includes $50 per visit for individual psychology consultation, $50 per visit for individual hypnotherapy consultation (by a psychologist), and $25 per visit for group psychology.
Max Extras covers $400 for psychology services per person and per calendar year. This includes $60 per visit for individual psychology consultation, $60 per visit for individual hypnotherapy consultation (by a psychologist), and $30 per visit for group psychology.
Note that Frank Health also applies waiting periods to some Extras benefits, including psychology, which is usually two months long. If you’ve recently joined the fund or upgraded your cover, it’s best to double-check whether your waiting period has passed before accessing any services.

When you book a psychology session through Talked, you will be charged 48 hours before your appointment. After the session, Talked will provide you with a detailed invoice that includes all the information Frank Health Insurance typically requires, including:
The patient’s name and full address
The psychologist’s name and provider number
Date and item number of the service
Type and description of the provided service
Amount paid
With your invoice ready, you can then submit your claim through any of the following methods:
Access the Frank online portal or use the Frank app
Log in to your member account
Upload your invoice (photo or PDF)
Submit your claim in minutes

If your provider offers HICAPS, you can:
Swipe your Frank member card at the clinic
Your rebate is processed immediately
You only pay the remaining gap
It’s best to submit your claim as soon as possible after your session. This helps ensure that your claim is processed within your benefit year, avoid missing deadlines, and also to get your rebate faster.Â
Also, remember that waiting periods apply, typically around 2 months for psychology and counselling when you first take out or upgrade Extras cover.
No. Like all private health insurers in Australia, Frank does not allow you to claim the same session through both Medicare and Extras.
Here’s how to make the most of both systems:
Use your Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) first
Once you’ve used your Medicare sessions, switch to Frank Extras
This approach helps maximise your total rebates across the year. Talked can connect you with a GP if you need support accessing an MHTP. who can assess your eligibility and – if you’re eligible – issue an MHTP.

Frank gives you flexibility when choosing a provider, as long as they meet eligibility standards. Look for:
AHPRA-registered psychologists
Accredited counsellors or mental health social workers
Providers who can issue compliant invoices or offer HICAPS
If you’re unsure, ask the provider before booking whether they’re recognised by private health funds. Alternatively, you can use Talked to browse psychologists recognised by Frank Health and then proceed with booking either a short introductory session or a full, 50-minute session.

Phoenix Health Extras can make psychological care more accessible, and Talked ensures the claiming process will be hassle-free. After your appointment, you will receive a valid invoice ready to submit through the Phoenix Health app or portal. No guesswork, no delays.
If you are ready to begin, explore psychologists on Talked and choose the practitioner who best suits your needs.
